ABSTRAK
Sebagai kegiatan awal dari program pemuliaan pohon yaitu dilakukan kegiatan eksplorasi. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah memberikan informasi mengenai potensi benih samama dari sebaran alami di desa Wakal Maluku Tengah. Metode yang digunakan yaitu Pertama: eksplorasi materi genetik berupa pengumpulan informasi distribusi dan musim berbuah samama; pemilihan dan seleksi pohon induk; pengunduhan dan pengumpulan buah. Kedua; penanganan benih samama yang terdiri dari ekstraksi benih berupa pelunakan buah, pemisahan biji, pengeringan biji dan pengemasan serta penyimpanan benih. Hasil eksplorasi diperoleh sebaran alami samama tersebar pada berbagai tipe habitat mulai tepi pantai, dekat aliran sungai, dataran rendah hingga ketinggian dan berada dalam hutan campuran atau berasosiasi dengan jenis lain. Jumlah buah yang terkumpul yaitu 35 buah dari induk pohon terpilih sebanyak 5 pohon dengan menghasilkan rata-rata berat benih per individu pohon yaitu15,56 gr.

ABSTRACT
As an initial activity of tree breeding programs are carried out exploration activities. The purpose of this activity is to provide information on the potential of the natural distribution of seeds Samama Wakal village in Central Maluku. The method used is First: the exploration of the genetic material in the form of information gathering and distribution of the fruiting season Samama; election and selection of the parent tree; downloading and collecting fruit. Second; Samama seed treatment which consists of the extraction of the seed in the form of softening of the fruit, seed separation, drying and packaging of seeds and seed storage. The results obtained by exploration of the natural distribution Samama scattered in various habitat types ranging waterfront, near streams, plains to a height and are in a mixed forest or in association with other types.
